Although he hasn’t defended yet graduation happens in May so here we go…
21 Jump Street
21 Jump Street is a comedy re-make featuring Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum with a hint of Ice Cube. I saw the preview for this movie and thought it was probably going to be terrible but reviews of it said otherwise so we went to see it. This movie was hilarious. Brent and I left quoting lines or at least trying to quote lines from it so it had to be good.
Jonah plays the smart unathletic cop while Channing is the althletic nonstudious cop. They botch an arrest and are sent to 21 Jump Street where they find out they are now part of a task force that sends young looking cops back to high school to catch criminal students like drug dealers and such. When they go back to high school they find the cool crowd has changed and they need to make some adjustments.
They make a mess of everything and of course like high schools movies do it all comes down to prom night. I laughed so much and I’m pretty sure if I watched it again I’d laugh just as much.
The Hunger Games
The Hunger Games is the first in a series of movies to come based on the books by Suzanne Collins. Oh YA novels made in to movies, how I love thee. I hear they are breaking this 3 book series in to 4 movies (a la Twilight) but that’s dumb. These three books aren’t even that long for goodness sake. I’ll probably complain about that in a later movie post.
I re-read the book prior to seeing the movie since it had been so long and I think they did a really good job leaving in the most relevant and letting go of stuff that just wouldn’t really work. I also enjoyed getting to see behind the scenes in the making of the Hunger Games which isn’t in the book at all. Seneca with his crazy facial hair and seeing more of President Snow so you get a feel for how evil he is…these are good additions. One thing I didn’t like was Haymitch. I can’t really say it’s bad acting on Woody’s part. I think they wrote it poorly. He comes in drunk but then all the sudden he’s sober and a great helper. No, No, No. Ack. The man is supposed to sober up a little bit but he stuggles with it. Come on people! Rant complete. Also, the ending was different from the book so I wonder how their going to start all that love triangle-ish stuff. I guess we’ll know in about a year or so.
Well, the movie is great. I recommend it. It’s kinda strange when you wish they showed a little more violence but kids killing each other is crazy and you just don’t get the same horrible feelings about it during the movie. AAAnnd, one more thing….Cinna (Lenny Kravitz) is terrific!!
Thanks Jean and Colleen for joining me in this Hunger Games adventure.
Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy
Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy is based on a book and stars Gary Oldman, Colin Firth, and Tom Hardy. Who doesn’t love those first two actors? Amazing!
It’s the Cold War and there seems to be a Soviet spy among the MI6. Who better to bring back from retirement to figure this whole thing out? Well George Smiley (played by Gary O.) of course. There is some past scenes mixed with the present and you’re trying to figure out who the big bad spy is during the whole movie. You do find out and there is a terrific ending. I just love all the little parts of the movie that come together in the end. Everything makes sense.
Gary Oldman was up for best actor for this movie. He didn’t get it but…someday Gary…someday.
Leo Time
We got to spend some time with the boys yesterday and we finally got to hold them! Oh man they’re cute. We didn’t really take many pictures but at least we captured Leo.
Mama’s Little Yella Pils
Mama’s Little Yella Pils is by Oskar Blues. It’s fine. It’s a pilsner. Not much else to say about that.
Arctic Panzer Wolf
Arctic Panzer Wolf by Three Floyds is an imperial IPA. There’s not much you can say but yummy.
Chocolate Abbey
Chocolate Abbey is by New Glarus. I decided to pick up one bottle of this because it sounded interesting. I can say that is was very interesting. It is a dubbel and just tastes like a beer with chocolate in it. I thought it was kinda gross. Not undrinkable gross just….this is crazy weird, not right, gross. If you have a chance, by all means give it a try and see how confused your taste buds are.
Moon Man
Moon Man is made by New Glarus in Wisconsin. Another one you can’t get around here but this American pale ale is quite good.
The Dark Tower Series
I know it’s been awhile since I’ve talked about books on here but I just finished the Dark Tower Series by Stephen King and it seems like an accomplishment of sorts. Other than the first book, The Gunslinger, I’ve read them all on my Kindle so you don’t get a feel of how big the books are but some of them are quite long. It took me about a year to finish…don’t worry, I’ve read a lot of other books during that time as well.
One day Brent is on the internets and sees a post about the best sci fi books and the Dark Tower series was one of them. He encouraged me to read them and well shoot, if it’s one of the best, hook me up! I haven’t really read much sci fi so it was kind of a new experience for me. Overall, I really enjoyed it. I feel like each book had some slow parts where I struggled to continue but then all the sudden stuff starts happening and I’m hooked. There are seven books in all (and apparently another one coming out this year that fills in some gaps between book 4 and 5) and I’d say the middle ones are the best.
If you need a big series of books to read. Go for it!
Now I may tackle Game of Thrones.
